Built around 1181 A.D. by King Jayavarman VII, Angkor Thom ("Great City") was the last capital of the Khmer Empire.  Its fortified walls and moat enclosed temples, official residences, administration buildings, and the Royal Palace.  This is one of the five entrances to Angkor Thom, and it is the closest one to Angkor Wat, just to the south.
