Bayon lies at the center of the city of Angkor Thom, believed to be the state temple of king Jayavarman VII, Angkor's greatest ruler.  Over 200 of these faces decorate Bayon.  The faces represent Avalokiteshvara, the embodiment of compassion in Buddhism.
